How to Improve Your SAT Score: A Data-Driven Approach

Most students approach SAT improvement the wrong way. They do more practice questions, hope something clicks, and are disappointed when their score barely moves. The reality is that score improvement is a diagnostic process, not a volume game.

Why "Just Practice More" Doesn't Work
If you're making the same types of errors repeatedly, more practice just reinforces those errors. The student who does 500 practice questions without reviewing them is less prepared than the student who does 100 questions and carefully analyzes every mistake.
Score improvement comes from two things:
Identifying your specific error patterns
Drilling those patterns until they're gone
Step 1: Run a Score Diagnosis
After any practice test or practice set, categorize every wrong answer:
For Math:
Algebra (linear equations, systems, inequalities)
Advanced math (quadratics, functions, exponentials)
Problem-solving and data analysis (ratios, percentages, statistics)
Geometry and trigonometry
For Reading & Writing:
Grammar and conventions (punctuation, agreement, modifiers)
Craft and structure (main idea, purpose, words in context)
Information and ideas (evidence, inference, data)
After 2–3 practice sets, patterns emerge. Most students have 1–2 specific areas responsible for the majority of their point loss.
Step 2: Understand Why You Got Questions Wrong
Careless errors — You knew the material but rushed or misread the question. Fix: slow down, re-read questions twice, check your work on calculation problems.
Conceptual gaps — You didn't know the rule or formula. Fix: learn the concept, then practice it in isolation until it's automatic.
Trap answers — You picked an answer that looked right but was designed to mislead. Fix: understand what makes each wrong answer wrong, not just why the right answer is right.
Step 3: Practice Targeted, Not Random
Once you know your weak spots, practice them specifically. A focused week might look like:
Day 1–2: 20 linear equation problems, review every error
Day 3–4: 20 systems of equations problems, review every error
Day 5: Mixed algebra set (30 questions) to test retention
Weekend: Full section practice test, error log review

Step 4: Track Your Error Log
