SAT Practice Questions: Math — What to Expect and How to Prepare

The math section of the digital SAT has 44 questions across two modules. If you perform well on Module 1, you'll be routed to a harder Module 2 — which is where the higher scores come from.
What Math Topics Are Tested?
1. Algebra (~35%): Linear equations, systems, inequalities, linear functions.
2. Advanced Math (~35%): Quadratics, polynomial/exponential expressions, equivalent expressions.
3. Problem-Solving and Data Analysis (~15%): Ratios, percentages, statistics, probability.
4. Geometry and Trigonometry (~15%): Area, perimeter, volume, angles, circles, right triangle trig.
Question Formats
Multiple choice (~75%): Four answer choices, one correct.
Student-produced response (~25%): Type the answer directly. No choices to guess from.
Calculators are allowed throughout, but many questions are faster without one. Don't become calculator-dependent.
Sample Practice Questions by Type
Linear Equations
If 4x – 7 = 2x + 11, x = 9. SAT variant: "What is 3x – 2?" Answer: 25. Always check whether the question asks for x or an expression.
Systems of Equations
3x + 2y = 16 and x – y = 1. From the second: x = y + 1. Substitute: 5y + 3 = 16, y = 2.6.
Percentages
$240 reduced by 15%, then increased by 10%: $240 × 0.85 = $204. $204 × 1.10 = $224.40. Note: 15% – 10% ≠ 5% off the original.
Quadratics
x² – 4x – 12 = 0. Factor: (x – 6)(x + 2) = 0. Solutions: x = 6 or x = –2.
Data Interpretation
Line of best fit through (2, 65) and (8, 89): slope = 4. Equation: y = 4x + 57. At x = 5: y = 77.
Common Mistakes That Cost Students Points
Solving for x when the question asks for 2x + 3
Treating sequential percentage changes as additive
Forgetting to check both solutions for quadratics
Misreading which dataset a graph question refers to
How to Practice SAT Math Questions Effectively
Take a diagnostic to identify weak areas
Practice by topic until solid
Move to timed, mixed practice sets
Take full-length timed sections every 2 weeks
Review every wrong answer with written explanations
Hueprep's SAT math practice follows this sequence automatically — identifying your gaps from a short diagnostic and adapting question difficulty in real time.
Timing Strategy
35 minutes for 22 questions — about 95 seconds per question. If a question will take more than 2 minutes, skip and return. Use the flag feature and review in the final 2–3 minutes.
